About John Wilmshurst
With over 25 years of teaching and playing experience, John Wilmshurst has guided thousands of students; from beginners to advanced musicians; through schools, colleges, and private lessons.
Before relocating to Sydney in 2013, John ran two successful music studios in the UK - East London’s Docklands and Suffolk. He served as lead tutor for three county councils, a guitar teacher in East London, Essex and Suffolk colleges and institutions, and an examiner for the Registry of Guitar Tutors.
As a professional guitarist, John toured extensively across the UK and Europe for 15 years, performing up to 250 nights a year, recording in studios and earning an endorsement from Rotosound strings. His work has been featured in music magazines, instructional books, on radio broadcasts and television appearances.
In 2006-2008, John and his team led contemporary music workshops around the UK, tailored to students with special educational needs, a testament to his belief that music is for everyone.
In recent years, John has focused on raising his family, while continuing to mentor a small number of students online, connecting with learners worldwide in
In 2025 John is quietly re-entering the live music scene, sharing what he loves with his children and opening the door for them to find their own rhythm.
John currently teaches limited spaces to students of all ages from 6 to 60 in the Sydney Upper North Shore area from beginner to advanced. He has a six month waiting list.
